Replacing Your Honda Battery: A Quick Guide

Even with all the technological advancements, car batteries are not designed to last forever. If you notice that your headlights are dimming, your vehicle struggles to start, or you’ve needed a jump-start recently, it may be time to replace your battery. While it’s best to have a professional at Jones Honda handle the replacement, here’s a guide if you decide to do it yourself.

When to Replace Your Battery

Before replacing the battery, you should confirm that it needs replacing. Look for signs such as blue or white residue around the terminals, which could indicate corrosion. Be careful when handling this residue, as it may be corrosive. Another check involves ensuring the battery has had a full charge; take your vehicle for a 30-minute drive with all electronics turned off. Additionally, inspect the alternator if your Honda has a battery meter. While the engine is running, the alternator should maintain a charge of 13.8 – 14.2 volts. When the engine is off, the battery should charge between 12.4 and 12.8 volts.

Steps to Replace Your Battery

Start by parking your vehicle on a flat surface, away from potential hazards like open flames or traffic. Engage the parking brake, and wear gloves and safety goggles. Unplug any memory keepers and take note of any electronic codes. To remove the old battery, locate it in the engine compartment—it’s typically a rectangular box with two attached cables. First, disconnect the negative terminal to avoid short circuits, then the positive terminal. Carefully remove the old battery and place the new one in the same position. Reconnect the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal, and tighten the terminal clamps with a wrench. Close the hood and start your vehicle, checking that all electronics function properly. Dispose of the old battery according to local regulations.
